Glenn, Today, before 1300 UT, I asked at Central Apparatus in studio site and Shijak r/station to modulate in max. I hope this brought some improvements in receiving Radio Tirana in Enid, despite the hum (Drita Çiço, R. Tirana, June 12, via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Drita, Good. I missed monitoring the 1300 today, but will check for that. Does this apply to all the transmissions? (Glenn to Drita, via DXLD) Not to all transmissions. I'm afraid of distortions because of overmodulation at studio site, if I order my staff to ask for the max M% all the time. It is different when I ask that by myself. When I asked max M% today at 1300 UT the technician at studio site said: yes, I will do what you want, honey, I will keep modulation at max, without going to the red zone that is M% over 100% (Drita, ibid.) Dear Drita, The 2000 UT transmission today was much more intelligible than before, and the modulation did seem to be higher. I recorded it to listen to later when I have time. Thanks, (Glenn, WORLD OF RADIO 1363, ibid.) ** ARGENTINA. One wonders if they are buying the time from an existing commercial station, and if so which one and what else do they carry, or is it by chance a new transmitter for this purpose? Power and coverage area? A quick look at the WRTH 2007 does not show any 6+ WA stations at all on this frequency (Glenn, ibid.) According to http://www.ausradiostations.com/fmwa.html 104.9 is allocated to Queer FM, a Gay and Lesbian narrowcasting service in north Perth. An earlier listing of planned allocations by the now defunct Australian Broadcasting Authority gave the power as just 50 watts. The Queer FM website doesn't have any info about CRI. This could also, I suppose, be a different transmitter serving a different area. But the message from CRI says it started in 2006! Presumably this is a typo for 2007 (Andy Sennitt, ibid.) Ergo, the Chicom are endorsing homosexuality!! Re 7-069: Glenn The photographs of this site establish clearly that the partially completed 8 mast array is one of the very standard Russian design. I have made extensive impedance measurements (in the snow) and modeling of one of these, and they are a really elegant design. The basic design is fully described in the standard Russian textbook on MF antennas. This one not only doesn't have the 8th mast and has some towers lacking the skirts, it doesn't appear to have any of the open-wire feed system. These can be constructed for unidirectional or bidirectional operation, and can be constructed with about +/- 30 degrees of slewing, as was noted in your item. They are usable anywhere in the MF band. As nearly as I can tell no two are identical, but the masts all have a driven upper skirt and a parasitic lower skirt, and are matched entirely with open-wire quasi-coaxial short-circuited transmission line stub sections rather than discrete component networks. One row of towers is driven, the other is a parasitic "reflector." They appear to have been used primarily for nighttime skywave operation, often paired with a much simpler, usually omni, antenna for operation during daylight hours. These, together with the 1.5 km and 2.5 km long "small sunrise" and "large sunrise" traveling wave MF arrays, represent very substantial capital investment, the likes of which we will probably never see again. Nice thistles, too (Ben Dawson, WA, June 11, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I analysed the pictures on the website http://www.predavatel.com/bg/6/kav.htm in order to have an idea of the target area in Arab countries. This planned R Moscow relay site at Varna Kaliakra is much closer to the Mediterranean area - save of some 350 km - compared to other R Moscow external Kamo-ARM or Grigoriopol-MDA relay sites. SGP4+4/SV 4+4 antennas array - of 145 meters mast height - could be meant for Ankara, Cyprus, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt target in 130/160 degrees, and the two tower mast directional installation of 172 meters mast height - towards 190/220 degr target at Istanbul, Athens, Albania, Sicily, and Libya. Frequencies to take into consideration some 20 years ago were: ex-MDA 999 and/or 1431 kHz, also former DWL Malta 1557 kHz channel was freed after USSR collapse. Hi Raymond, Some more time has passed, and the last time I was awake at 0600, WHRI was still on 7335. Have you had any encouraging signs of progress toward resolving this? Can you suggest anything further listeners/users can do or I can do? How about putting a message about the problem on your transmissions like you did for many months previously? At least during the 06-11 UT period. That would increase the annoyance/interference factor to WHRI, and you are obviously within your rights to increase the voice content of your broadcasts. Regards, (Glenn Hauser to Raymond Pelletier, CHU, via DXLD) Hi Glenn, I have no further news about interference on 7335. The wheels of inter-governmental negotiations move very slowly. The most effective solution is to have your listeners protest to the WHRI and to the FCC directly. The FCC may listen to the lobby group that offers the most protests. ELECTION RESULTS BLACKOUT UPHELD OTTAWA – Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the longstanding legal ban on reporting early vote results on federal election nights in regions of the country where the polls are still open. In a 5-4 decision on Thursday, the court ruled the ban can be justified under the Charter of Rights. Since 1938 federal election law has forbidden the reporting of early results from other areas of the country in places where people may not have had a chance yet to cast their ballots. http://www.thestar.com/News/article/192176 And yet, RCI has routinely broken this law just about every federal election by broadcasting the results from the Maritimes before the polls close in Ontario and Quebec (Fred Waterer, Programming Matters, June ODXA Listening In via DXLD) ? The CRTC has announced that HDTV Networks, Inc. has filed an application for over-the-air HDTV stations in eight of Canada's largest cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. As is the usual procedure when an application is filed for a new station, a call has been issued for additional applications for over- the-air DTV stations across Canada (apparently not limited to these eight cities). Also, as is the usual procedure, the CRTC does not guarantee that *any* applications will be approved, even one or more proves technically acceptable. (I especially note that three new stations were granted last week in each of the Alberta cities, Calgary & Edmonton. The CRTC may - or may not - find that these cities are not able to economically support additional stations, even if they can be authorized without interference) The CRTC also indicated that in some of these cities (probably the two Ontario cities & Montreal?) new standalone DTV stations can only be authorized on the channels currently reserved for existing stations to transition to DTV (one wonders if this will spur more existing stations in these cities to get their DTV facilities authorized & built). http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Notices/2007/pb2007-62.htm (Doug Smith, June 13, WTFDA via DXLD) ** CHAD. "The Management Committee, headed by attorney Moshe Gavish, extended the grace period to solve the IBA's severe budgetary crisis until Tuesday morning. It also made it clear to the administration that it would offer a proposal of its own if necessary. "Everyone on the committee will have a much clearer conscience if union representatives and the IBA administration can work out an agreement as to which workers will be made redundant, rather than the management committee issuing a specific edict which might leave hundreds of IBA personnel unemployed. The employees knew this and that accounts for the stormy protest they staged at the Management Committee's meeting on Monday. At that meeting, the Management Committee was supposed to decide the fate of foreign news broadcasts and certain cultural broadcasts on Israel Radio and Israel Television, but failed to reach a final resolution. "It didn't discuss the IBA English News on television and as far as the radio stations were concerned, it decided not to close down any radio station for the next few days, nor to do anything that would harm the interests and imperil the future of public broadcasting, which last year celebrated its 70th anniversary. "Meanwhile, the administration has been told to give first priority to negotiations with union representatives so that whatever plan is agreed upon can be implemented as quickly as possible. The Management Committee was not considering weeks but days for that process to begin... Television studios for the English news are located in Jerusalem's Romema neighborhood, while radio broadcasts are in the Russian Compound in another part of the city. Employees, meanwhile, say they would support the idea if it ensured the future of English- language public radio and television..." "...As part of the cutbacks, the entire English-language television news may also be moved to Channel One. As of now, only a short news bulletin is broadcast on Channel One, with the full program available on Channel 33. As part of cuts, IBA may temporarily shut down Channel 33 and broadcast English news on Channel One at a different time slot. 73 (José Miguel Romero, Burjasot (Valencia), España, WORLD OF RADIO 1363, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Re 7-069: There are anomalies in the current sched shown on their web site - maybe 15615 is intended to carry Spanish to LA, or just turned on early as Glenn suggests? In an indictment sure to jolt Minnesota's large Hmong population, federal authorities in California charged Gen. Vang Pao and eight others Monday with plotting to overthrow the Communist government in their former homeland of Laos. "We are looking at conspiracy to murder thousands and thousands of people at one time," Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Twiss said in court. Vang Pao led Hmong soldiers who fought alongside the CIA and U.S. troops during the Vietnam War, paving the way for thousands of Hmong to end up in Minnesota. Once revered, Vang Pao has had his popularity and credibility decline in recent years. Two years ago, the Minnesota attorney general's office forced the Vang Pao Foundation to close and pay restitution after violating state nonprofit laws. Vang Pao splits his time between homes in Minnesota and Orange County, Calif. He was scheduled to be in St. Paul for next month's Hmong soccer tournament. He is now in custody after being arrested at his home in Westminster, Calif., on Monday morning. "Some people have positive feelings about the general, some don't like him ... but this will come as a shock," said Ilean Her, director of the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans. "I have to see some evidence," she said. "He's at the trail end of his popularity and I would say these charges would have had more credibility 10 years ago when he had much more influence, at least here in Minnesota." Xang Vang -- who drives the general when he comes to Minnesota, including a trip for a veterans' celebration earlier this year -- said that despite the recent controversies with his foundation, Vang Pao remains highly respected in the local Hmong community. "He's like George Washington to the American citizens," said Vang, who runs the Hmong American Mutual Assistance Association. "Without him, the Hmong would all be dead in Laos." Vang Pao has long been unwavering in his promise to Hmong refugees that he would help them overthrow the Communist government of Laos so that they could one day return to their homeland. He has reportedly raised millions of dollars in the past 25 years, often from impoverished Hmong families who make monthly contributions to a secretive organization called Neo Hom. Her said the indictment will likely spark fear in the local Hmong community, which is considered the largest urban concentration of Hmong in the country. "Resistance fighting can now be labeled as terrorism by U.S. authorities," Her said. "The local community will want to see the evidence." Six-month investigation The nine men indicted, including Harrison Ulrich Jack, a 1968 graduate of West Point, allegedly conspired to obtain hundreds of AK-47s, Stinger missiles, anti-tank missiles, mines, rockets and C-4 explosive, as well as smoke grenades, to overthrow the Laotian government. All the suspects are in custody and appeared before a federal magistrate judge in U.S. District Court in Placerville, Calif., on Monday afternoon to hear the charges read against them. The charges stem from a six-month undercover investigation, dubbed "Operation Tarnished Eagle," that included a series of meetings with undercover federal agents during which the plotters allegedly discussed moving weapons into safe houses in Thailand and Laos. Vang Pao is accused with the eight others of violating the U.S. neutrality act by plotting on American soil to invade a foreign country. Jack, a former U.S. infantry officer who retired in 1977 as a lieutenant colonel in the California National Guard, allegedly approached defense contractors seeking munitions for the plot, according to a criminal complaint. Some of the suspects allegedly sought out former Army Special Forces and Navy Seal veterans to serve as mercenaries. 125 AK-47s and 20,000 rounds The complaint charges that since January the suspects have inspected a wide variety of weapons, including AK-47s, Stinger missiles and Claymore mines. The complaint said the group purchased "an initial installment of 125 AK-47 machine guns, 20,000 rounds of ammunition, and crates of smoke grenades for a purchase price of $100,000, to be delivered in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 12, 2007." A $50,000 payment was to be made June 11, with the balance to be handed over the next day, when the weapons were to be received, the complaint said. A third payment of $50,000 was to cover the purchase of some Stinger missiles, the government contends. Jack allegedly met and spoke with an undercover federal agent several times to discuss weapons procurement, and had budgeted $9.8 million for the desired munitions. The money was to come from "contributions from community leaders through the clan leadership," the complaint says. Various discussions of the plot allegedly took place at Sacramento- area bars, restaurants and hotels, and the parking lot of a Kmart near Hwy. 99 in Stockton. Reducing targets 'to rubble' In May, the complaint said, the suspects had "intelligence operatives" in place in the capital city of Vientiane, Laos, "conducting surveillance of military and government facilities in downtown Vientiane." The suspects also "issued an operations plan to a contractor to conduct a military strike in downtown Vientiane," the complaint said, "against specifically identified military and civilian government personnel and buildings." It said the suspects told their mercenary force "to reduce [the targets] to rubble, and make them look like the results of the attack upon the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001." Reason RNW refuses to acknowledge French Guiana relay? Anyone know why R. Nederland refuses to acknowledge the French Guiana relay? Heard RNW April 20, 2007 0201 UTC 9405 DRM from French Guiana. On June 13, 2007 received QSL indicating transmission was from Madagascar. If true, quite fantastic for DRM! Also, the QSL card doesn't have French Guiana listed as a Site. Andy? 73, (Kraig, KG4LAC, Krist, June 14, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) I think this was simply an error by someone at RNW. Mistakes do happen. I don't like the phrase "refuses to acknowledge" as a human error is not the same thing as someone telling you that they cannot, or will not, acknowledge it. If you re-submit the details I will try to get you a corrected QSL. You can use the media @ rnw.nl address (Andy Sennitt, RNW, ibid.) Andy, Thanks for your reply. At times, black words on white background do not properly convey our thoughts. No harm was intended. I wrote "refuses to acknowledge" because of the fact French Guiana is not even listed as one of the possible Sites on the QSL card. I thought, perhaps, this DRM transmission was via a broker and not directly controlled by RNW. Or, similar to CRI, a disconnect between the frequency planners and the people answering the letters. I have read, in the past, your posts concerning people only writing for QSL cards. I normally send program comments concerning the broadcast. These comments are both pro and con as appropriate. I also send a question if I have a question concerning the broadcast. Rarely, do I receive a reply to my comments or questions. If broadcasters, seemingly, ignore comments and questions why should listeners bother to comment or send questions? 73, (Kraig W. Krist, VA, ibid.) Hi Kraig, The DRM transmission via TDF is a temporary arrangement till the end of the year as Bonaire is currently being upgraded. When the work at Bonaire is finished, the DRM transmission will revert to Bonaire. Yes, of course in theory it would be nice to answer every letter. But we simply don't have the staff to do it. Every E-mail and letter are read by whoever is producing Echoes, our feedback programme. I know that listener comments are taken seriously because I often hear colleagues discussing them, and some also find their way on to our Intranet. It's true that we can no longer sustain the kind of one-to-one relationship with listeners that used to be possible. But times have changed, not only at RNW but at other stations too. Budgets are smaller, and Heads of Department prefer to invest the money in producing programmes rather than employing secretarial staff to answer individual letters. There is, however, always room for improvement in the way we handle things, and I will discuss your comments with colleagues when I return from my vacation next week (Andy Sennitt, ibid.) Andy, Thanks for the information on the French Guiana relay. Please do not think I'm only writing about RNW when I wrote about comments and questions. I have had the same experience from many stations. Write questions and comments only to have them disappear into the ether (ionosphere HI!). Recently I wrote a station with a question about something I heard on their broadcast. After several weeks I received a QSL card in the postal mail. This was a surprise since 1. I did not ask for a QSL and 2. I really did not provide enough details to earn the QSL. I guess this station is simply an automatic verifier. Shame. 73, (Kraig Krist, ibid.) Apparently just what Andy has already outlined: The remaining staff has other things to do than "checking reception reports". And I think it can only be counterproductive to state that this is a "shame", since the obvious alternative is to stop sending out QSL cards altogether. I suspect that much more stations would have chosen to do so already if these reception reports could not be counted as incoming listeners mail, a figure which can be useful to justify the whole service. Btw, recently Glenn had a BDXC-UK (if I recall correct) item about a new generation of DXers that could arise with DRM. It already exists here in Germany. They do not care about QSL cards. In fact they do not care about the traditional shortwave broadcasters at all, obvious from statements like Norkring should better put NRK P3 on air than the boring blabbering from the BBC. One of the FM's in Lynchburg was changing format. They played It's Only Rock and Roll by the Rolling Stones for approximately 15 hours. During that time it was reported that people called 911 to find out what was wrong at the station and why no one answered when they called. The next day the station went country and is today (Larry Stoler, ibid.) When I called WVVE-FM their answering machine said "Thanks for calling WVVE 102.3, please leave a message after the tone. The world is not coming to an end, it’s just changing formats. Enid Police Department has received several calls about a countdown currently being broadcast on Oklahoma City radio station WKY AM 930, which can be heard across the state. “They’re inquiring as to what is going on,” Sgt. Eric Holtzclaw, Enid- Garfield County 911 Communications Center administrator, said of callers who have contacted the police department, a couple through the 911 lines. What is going on, according to Dax Davis, spokesman for Citadel Broadcasting, which owns WKY, is a format change for the station, which had been broadcasting in Spanish until the countdown, which is now in English, began. Davis said the countdown will continue until the new format is revealed at 9 a.m. Monday morning. Currently, WKY is broadcasting the words T-minus, followed by the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the new format release. Davis said interspersed in the countdown are trivial comments, such as “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?” However, Holtzclaw said, it is some of those comments along with the countdown that had some people in the Enid area concerned. He said the department checked into the station and there is no problem, it is just a format change and no violation has occurred. Davis said Citadel has received numerous phone calls inquiring about the countdown, with curiosity from listeners ranging from a takeover to something wrong with their stereos. “Certainly we wouldn’t have done it if we thought it would cause public concern,” he said. Citadel is the second owner of WKY, which is the oldest radio station in the state, Davis said (Enid Eagle via DXLD) ** OKLAHOMA [and non]. Dear Mr Hauser, I am looking for information on the career and intention of Brother R. G. Stair. He is mainly very audible in England on 6110 kHz which I think is a hired frequency based in Germany. The main issue is that I cannot see how a man of his means sustains the necessary finances to broadcast on such a large scale, unless his donations are phenomenal or he possesses a personal fortune. There is a general for-and-against mystery about this person and I certainly think his versions of the chorus majesty which punctuate his programming banish completely any idea that this song is either decent music or sound theology! I do hope you can say where more is written about this character. Secondly, do you receive a station called Reflections Europe in America? For a number of years, it has operated on unlicensed frequencies in activity that amounts to pirate radio with a Christian inspiration! I would really like to know why whoever is behind the Sunday broadcasts thinks that laws can be broken in order to effectively rebroadcast material from recognised teachers and evangelists. Oddly, the people who promote one of the more unusual programmes are firmly convinced that the station is acting legally. Can you perhaps tell me anything further about this anomalous provider? I keep hearing that its transmitters are located in Ireland, where broadcasting conventions are more easily flouted, but no one has ever commented on why Christians would become involved. Thirdly, have you noticed surprising changes within the broadcasts of Gene Scott? Here was another man with a strange voice who used to be everywhere on the dial at different parts of the day. Now that voice has gone and a lady has replaced him talking about some kind of crisis in the religious organisation he represents. Do you know anything about why this has happened? I must admit that I do not find Scott`s long monologues the most interesting thing on the air, but I do hope it is not some kind of scandal that is taking him from his audience. Lastly, I have to say that I would welcome anything at all to remove the programmes of EWTN Global Catholic Radio from the air. For the most part, they are a huge embarrassment to anyone who professes normative Catholicism. There is so much misconception and error involved in this station that I had almost run out of ink and stationery trying to send in corrections. I also take strong exception to this station`s use of theatrical accents to read prayers and creeds and dramatise the Mass. They have no real understanding of how offensive these stagey gimmicks are to Hispanic and Italian listeners. As well as these, the network has recently decided to promote the Divine Mercy devotion using a pop song reminiscent of a pious girl group. Nothing less likely to attract people to this prayer could be imagined. Unfortunately, this station will not respond to complaints and so the daily exercise in tastelessness and cultural mistakes persists. My own view is that this network was a grand error from its inception. I suppose we have no option but to switch off, rather than endure its ridiculous version of belief longer. I am grateful for your own patience in reading my enquiries and hope that you are able to provide some answers. I would listen to World of Radio much more, but at the moment, WWCR is not around as it used to be. Perhaps things might improve with a different receiver. My good wishes to you all, Yours sincerely from the U.K., (Jason Redvers Latham, Beverley, 7 June 2007, fountain pen by p-mail, retyped by gh for DX LISTENING DIGEST) Evidently he does not use the internet at all; else he could have known the answers to his questions long ago from reading DXLD. I suppose I shall have to dig out the typewriter and see if it still worx, but briefly answering here: Stair`s source of income is unknown. I suppose he may have a few major donors which account for most of it. He allegedly does pay his SW bills promptly, so stations are eager to have him on regardless of the nonsense he purveys, and go out of their way to accommodate his comings and goings, the schedule changing just about every month. He has been involved in scandals regarding mind-control and sexual impropriety with women living in his cult`s compound, and was briefly gaoled a few years ago. This was covered in the local press, but it obviously was not enough to put an end to his ``ministry``. Reflections Europe is seldom heard in NAm, being a low-power pirate apparently in Ireland. I fail to see why you assume that Christianity necessarily correlates with morality or legality. You have missed an important event, which is exactly what the so- called University Network would like to happen. Doctor Gene Scott died a few years ago and ever since then you have been hearing his old recordings. It`s entirely up to his widow and successor, Pastor Melissa Scott whether she plays the tapes or devotes more and more of the available airtime to herself, which is what has been happening lately, altho just today June 17 I was hearing the gruff DGS himself once again. I cannot waste my time listening to either of them, but apparently income is falling off since his death, thus her entreaties. EWTN is certainly an offshoot from mainstream RCatholicism, founded by a wacky nun who thinx she is more Catholic than the Pope, and it`s interesting to hear how at least one traditional Catholic perceives it. I cannot say I am surprised that they do not respond to criticism and correxion from mere listeners. A prime example of the `stagey` broadcasts is ``Paz a la luz de la luna, En vivo desde Miami``, UT Tue-Sat 0400-0600 on 7455 still colliding with RTTY, and // 13615 switching to 11615 in the middle of it (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A [non]. The FCC isn't going to stop. What's happening around Austin and San Antonio is happening all around the country. The FCC will continue to allow translators to be licensed in virtually any place they can be "shoehorned" in. When Docket 80-90 was being discussed about twenty-five years ago many broadcasters complained that allowing so many new stations would result in the "AM-ization" of the FM band. Well, it happened. But as bad as the crowding of the dial became after the FCC issued its revised table of allocations, things would only get worse with the "Great Translator Invasion." During the translator filing window in March, 2003 the FCC received more than 13,000 applications for new stations. As you know, the vast majority of those came from large religious broadcasters. With so many of the applications being "mutually exclusive" the FCC had to find ways to whittle the list down. But even if some applicants were disqualified for various reasons and others withdrew a huge backlog remained. The process of sifting through all the translator applications is still going on, despite the fact that we've seen many new stations signing on in recent months. There's another issue here. It's about programming diversity on a local level, and the FCC dropped the ball on that one, too. Literally thousands of potential low power broadcasters (LPFM's) basically lost the fight before it began, since many of the large religious broadcasters applied for LPFM channels. Despite what the rules say, a great number of LPFM's essentially carry no locally originated programming. It would have been good if the FCC had given priority to locally owned and locally originated LPFM's, but without anything miraculous like congressional action, that's not going to happen. Six months later, he was attacked by unidentified men near his apartment in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, and the walls outside his apartment were spray-painted with insults. Mindful of such treatment, another Uzbek journalist, who asked not to be named, said he writes only about what he sees, no longer conducting interviews, lest he reveal himself as a reporter. I, too, have been shadowed, by a car with no number plates, as I spoke with cotton farmers in the Jizzakh province. Many farmers walked away, wary of being seen with a journalist. In this Central Asian country, independent journalists run a real risk of being jailed or beaten in a wave of repression that began on the streets in Andijan and has never let up. At the very least reporters, and those who cooperate with them, can be spied on or harassed. Few independent journalists remain, and as a result, the world – and Uzbeks – get precious little real news about Uzbekistan. The few who stay continue to look for ways to tell their stories, against great odds. . . Some news about the OAS and sports and then back to Spanish (Sheryl Paszkiewicz, WI, Radio is TV with imagination WORLD OF RADIO 1363, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Today I received a care package from Radio Nacional de Venezuela, after 391 days. What makes this one unusual is that it arrived via FedEx, rather than the postal service. I think they may value me as a listener, as the receipt inside converted to $40.30 USD or $43.05 CAD, which is considerably more than by airmail. They may be hoping I will read their literature (all in Spanish, and unavailable in the US at any price) with titles like Empresas de Producción Social, La Pobreza de Venezuela, and Obras del Gobierno Bolivariano. The FedEx package originated in Caracas, Venezuela. I heard RNV via Cuba on 13680 during the East Coast evening hours, all in Spanish (good practice!). I wrote to Final las Marias, Entre Chapellin y Country Club, La Florida, Caracas 1050. One wonders why they don't target the US with English for Bolivarian programming, the way Cuba does with its programs, unless they see the US as a large Spanish- speaking area. This literature will keep me busy for a while. The oil bucks may be coming from this area. Watch the next Red Sox game. (gh) CONVENTIONS & CONFERENCES +++++++++++++++++++++++++ DATE AND PLACE SET FOR INFORMAL NORTHEAST SUMMER DX GTG Mark your calendars...SATURDAY, JULY 28 is the one date we've found that will work for an exceedingly informal gathering of DXers in the northeast, inspired by the wildly successful Madison-Milwaukee GTG. In lieu of any organized eastern convention this year, Jim Renfrew has kindly offered up his new spread in Clarendon, New York, about 20 miles west of Rochester and 15 minutes north of NY Thruway (I-90) exit 47, for DXers to get together for a day of conversation, recreation and maybe even some DX. There's absolutely no agenda - just show up, bring a radio or a TV if you'd like (Jim will have his receivers and antennas fired up, and I'll bring out mine as well), pack a bathing suit if you fancy a dip in the creek or the hot tub, and at the end of the day maybe we'll all go out for some dinner somewhere. There are several inexpensive hotels in Brockport, about 5 minutes away from Jim's place, as well as in Batavia, about 20 minutes to the south. No organized discount rates or anything like that; if you need a hotel room, contact one of us and we'll point you in the right direction. No organized station tours, though if enough people were interested in seeing WXXI, I'm sure something could be arranged. No scheduled presentations, but if Rich Wertman wants to bring some stuff to sell, I'm sure there will be ready buyers. There's nothing organized for Friday or Sunday, either, for those arriving early or leaving late. The Rochester Red Wings (AAA affiliate of the Twins) and the Batavia Muckdogs (single-A affiliate of the Cards) are both at home Friday night, and the Muckdogs are home Sunday afternoon as well, for any who are interested. RSVPs would be nice, and I'm sure Jim would appreciate a few bucks toward the cost of refreshments, or bring along some refreshments to share, if you'd like. Spouses and families are welcome. Check with Jim about dogs and horses and such. Please feel free to share this notice among other DXers --- the more, the merrier! According to the Ann Arbor News, store owner Ola Jeanne Purchase McCollough and her husband, Dan McCollough, decided it was time to retire and move closer to their children and grandchildren in Minnesota. "I would have liked to find someone to take over and run the business, but it's hard to find someone who's willing to be here six days a week," Dan McCollough told the newspaper, adding, "That's what it takes to run a small business." Employee John Ransom also cited stiff competition from internet-based and mail-order businesses that can sell for less and deliver overnight (From the CQ News Service via Bill Lauterbach, MI, DXLD) Glenn: I know this news article is a little old, but many are unaware of the closure of this legendary store. My father, ex-WN8MRG and I bought our first antenna supplies from this establishment back in 1968. And if I could add a piece of hearsay regarding the article, Dan McCollough told me personally that he had a pretty nice offer from a private company for the purchase of his store and property. It turns out this "private company" is going around this neighborhood and buying up all of the small properties, tearing them down and then laying down asphalt. We later found out that the University of Michigan needed more parking facilities for their football stadium, which is a stone's throw away from the former Purchase Radio Supply. What a shame. I should add that Purchase Radio Supply didn't just sell amateur radio supplies. They carried anything and everything that dealt with all aspects of the radio and electronics hobby. Not only did I buy new and used ham, shortwave and medium wave products from 1968 to 2007, but my last purchase in January was a stereo amplifier kit that now drives my Sirius Satellite Radio for two huge KLH speakers. Glad to hear you're on Sirius. We'll have to "tune" you in and crank up the audio! 73, (Bill Lauterbach - WA8MEA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) PROPAGATION +++++++++++ ASIA TO FLORIDA ON MW Glenn: -- "As discussed before, Thailand and other east Asians are really trans-polar from FL, not DU/trans-Pacific or trans-equatorial, and thus, QRM permitting, should be even more audible further north -- - unless they are coming long-path from the south..." Would this not have to be from the South, since the North Pole is bathed in 24 hour daylight this time of year?? Just a thought... (GREG HARDISON, CA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels during most of the period, though brief active intervals were observed at middle and high latitudes on 04 June and 09 - 10 June, respectively. ACE data indicated increased velocities on 04 June along with increased IMF variability. Velocities reached a peak of 576 km/sec at 04/1246 UTC while IMF total field intensity peaked at 04/1146 UTC (peak 9 nT) and IMF Bz decreased to a minimum of -5 nT at 04/1405 UTC. ACE data also indicated a solar sector boundary change (away (+) to toward (-)) occurred on 08 June associated with a minor increase in wind velocities (peak 463 km/sec at 09/2312 UTC), a brief increase in proton densities (peak 23 p/cc at 08/0037 UTC); increased IMF total field intensity (peak 10 nT at 09/0518 UTC), and periods of southward IMF Bz (minimum of - 7 nT at 09/0834 UTC). FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 13 JUNE - 09 JULY 2007 Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. C-class flares are expected during 13 - 14 June and 28 June – 09 July. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 17 June and 20 June - 05 July. Quiet to active conditions are expected during 14 - 15 June as a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream affects the field. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected during 15 - 18 June. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled to minor storm levels during 19 - 22 June with major storm levels possible on 19 June due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Activity is expected to decrease to mostly quiet levels during 23 - 29 June. Quiet to active conditions are expected during 30 June - 01 July as another recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream affects the field. Mostly quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the period. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2007 Jun 12 1954 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Environment Center # Product description and SEC contact on the Web # http://www.sec.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2007 Jun 12 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2007 Jun 13 75 5 2 2007 Jun 14 70 15 4 2007 Jun 15 70 10 3 2007 Jun 16 70 5 2 2007 Jun 17 70 5 2 2007 Jun 18 70 10 3 2007 Jun 19 70 25 5 2007 Jun 20 70 20 5 2007 Jun 21 70 15 4 2007 Jun 22 75 15 4 2007 Jun 23 75 12 3 2007 Jun 24 75 5 2 2007 Jun 25 75 5 2 2007 Jun 26 75 5 2 2007 Jun 27 75 5 2 2007 Jun 28 80 5 2 2007 Jun 29 80 5 2 2007 Jun 30 85 15 4 2007 Jul 01 85 15 4 2007 Jul 02 85 8 3 2007 Jul 03 80 5 2 2007 Jul 04 75 5 2 2007 Jul 05 75 5 2 2007 Jul 06 75 5 2 2007 Jul 07 75 5 2 2007 Jul 08 75 5 2 2007 Jul 09 75 5 2 (http://www.sec.noaa.gov/radio via WORLD OF RADIO 1363, DXLD) ###
