KTOO DTV TRANSMITTER SHUT OFF TO CONSERVE ENERGY KTOO has shut down the station's digital television transmitter on DTV channel 10, as a step toward conserving electricity during Juneau's electrical emergency. The digital TV shutdown will only affect viewers who watch KTOO's digital channel 10 over the air in Juneau. The outage won't affect viewers of KTOO-TV analog transmitters on channel 3 downtown, channel 10 in Lemon Creek and channel 6 in the Valley, nor KTOO viewers who subscribe to GCI Cable, Dish Network or DirecTV. Like other Juneau business and organizations, KTOO is taking other steps to save electricity, including reducing lighting and office equipment usage (from http://www.ktoo.org/more.cfm?info=5 at 2100 UT April 20 via DXLD) So expendable; could they do this after next February 19? How much energy was it using, anyway? Should be rather low-powered, not exactly on the high plains. An avalanche forces Juneau to rely on expensive diesel for generating electricity for the next three months, I heard KTOO`s offshoot KRNN announce at 2336 UT Sunday April 20 during their delayed Metropolitan Opera broadcast of Philip Glass` Satyagraha, http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/season/production.aspx?id=9251 (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Licensed facility is 1 kilowatt ERP, so more powerful than the analog! The applications say the analog transmitter output is 250 watts; the digital is 500. Now, analog power is peak; digital average, so the digital power is actually more than twice analog - I might wild-guess the analog *average* power is about 150-175 watts or so. Allowing for maybe 25% total efficiency I'd wild-guess the analog transmitter requires about 600-700 watts of utility power; the DTV might require 2 kW or so? It really doesn't seem like that much power. On the other hand, reading about the situation in Juneau http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/04/18/alaska-avalanche.html?ref=rss they're talking about utility rates *tripling* in Juneau for the next few months until the lines can be repaired. Effective next February the analog station will be off so they'll save 600 watts that way. They could back off the digital transmitter to 1/3 power and get back to where they are right now. They'd have to notify the FCC of the reduced power but that should be just a formality. -- (Doug Smith W9WI, Pleasant View, TN EM66, WTFDA via DXLD) ** ALBANIA. ARTV EUROSONG 2008 --- The Albanian song in Eurosong 2008 that will be held in May in Belgrade, Serbia. This is the winning song of Radio Tirana 46 annual Song Fest held in Dec 2007. The song is in Albanian. Ullmar (& family) is luckier than you others in enjoying the song because he knows Albanian very well. Perhaps, Ullmar would be so kind to translate it in English for you and me. Then, you would understand the clip and I can tell you more about clip ideas according to the explanations about it given to me by the author of the clip, who is the Director of our ARTV Satellite Program on TV, Mr. Pluton Vasi, a very friendly person. This clip was not understood by the Albanian students in Struga, Macedonia. I asked them when I was there last week. Bye from raining lovely Tirana (Drita Çiço, R. Tirana Monitoring Center, April 9, via gh, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Dear Ullmar, Here is the song text with letter ë. Thank YOUU! (Drita Çiço, R. Tirana Monitoring, to Ullmar Qvick, Sweden, via Drita, DXLD) The song is a ballad, not bad at all, but I don't think it will be high up on the final list. Not so easy really, but it was a good thing to deal with, to get away from our sadness after a hideous crime has been cleared up in Sweden - we got the news tonight. The murder of a ten year old girl. So I concentrated on the song. I give here alternatives in brackets. WE GAVE OUR HEARTS IN PLEDGE (WE HAD PAWNED OUR HEARTS) The clock ticks like a heart The mad clock runs It hasn't got hands You stole the time From my life The snow from (of) your voice Fell on my heart Covering The last refuge (shelter) Of love And the clock's hands stayed there Day after day Beat after beat We kept searching A perfect clock But it could not possibly be a heart Night after night Beat after beat We tried to get away But we couldn't Since we both gave our hearts In pledge (Since we both had pawned our hearts) It's now up to our friends who have English as their mother tongue to give their verdict. Kind regards from Sweden, where spring suddenly went cold as ice in our hearts (Ullmar Qvick, Sweden, April 13, via Drita, DXLD) Dearest Ullmar, I understand your worry about the yesterday killing story of the little girl in Sweden, and am very sorry indeed for that, but I know that you are a brave old Swedish man with Albanian brave heart. To whom that does not know Ullmar, he is 73 years old, at present married for the third time a young lady from Kosova, and they have a little daughter Arlinda, about 9-10 years old. Ullmar, we do appreciate your professional translation of the Albanian Eurosong 2008 and enjoyed very much how it 'sounds' in English. I would very much expect any comment or translation contribution on this song from Noel-Blackpool-UK, Glenn-Oklahoma,USA, or other people at Cc: that have English as their mother tongue to give their verdict... Be strong and all the best from lovely flourish Spring Tirana, (Drita to Ullmar, via DXLD) Drita & Ullmar, The translation reads very well in English, even poetic. Except there should be `for` after searching. As for the alternatives, I have no way of knowing which would be closer to the intent in Albanian. Best, (Glenn via DXLD) Dear Drita: Last night I had a very nice surprise. I heard a radio amateur of Albanian nationality! His call-sign is ZA1E and his name Sadik Agalliu. He was transmitting in excellent morse code on 7021 kHz and got contacts all over Europe and even Japan. I have written my reception report and hope he will receive it OK. As you probably remember, a Ukrainian laser specialist and a Macedonian diplomat are both licensed for amateur radio in Albania and active from Tirana. I have heard and got QSL cards from both of them. I also heard ZA1A operated by Martti from Finland (who also operated amateur radio from Kosova on February 17th to the anger of radio amateurs with YU callsigns...) But now to hear a native Albanian was real honey to me! I enjoy very much Albasoul and recommend all who like Albanian music to go to http://muzika.albasoul.com/ and to choose between different albums and songs. Yesterday I listened to a lot of these, among them the most lovely song I know, Dhuratë për ditëlindjen sung by Irma Libohova, where the text was written by my dear personal friend Fatos Arapi. When Arlinda had her birthday some years ago, she got a globe among all the gifts, and we were out in the garden that night singing that wonderful song for her.... Zemrat ndezur kudo, zjarre sot për liri Rrugëve qiellore globi con... Songs like this make my heart burn for the Albanian people and culture, believe me. Yours (Ullmar Qvick, Sweden, via Drita Çiço, DXLD) ** ANGUILLA. Re 8-048: 6043.39, University Network, 0115-0125+, April 18, very weak spur from 6090 with the usual religious programming (Brian Alexander, PA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) George McClintock, engineer for Caribbean Beacon, who knows the transmitter intimately, says he really cannot think of any way such a spur could be produced, altho it is not 100% impossible. Has anyone else heard it? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ANTARCTICA. LRA36 on 15476, only signal from 1900 UT; from 1912 very poor audio with Spanish music. 21/4 RX: Perseus Gr (Maurits Van Driessche, Belgium, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Still nothing here on occasional chex, but I can`t sit on frequency for two hours in case it infade. Anyone hear it yet in NAm since reactivation? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ASIA [non]. New Radio Free Asia QSLs --- A. J. Janitschek of Radio Free Asia (“RFA”) sent an announcement that RFA is offering its 21st QSL card honoring German physicist and radio pioneer, Heinrich R. Hertz. This is the second QSL card in their “radio pioneer” series. Heinrich Rudolph Hertz (1857 - 1894) was the first to broadcast and receive radio waves. He demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves by building equipment that not only produced radio waves, but also detected them. His experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. His name is also used for radio and electrical frequencies; hertz (Hz). The QSL card will be issued for all valid RFA reception reports from April 1 to June 30, 2008. Future QSL cards will include other radio pioneers like Nikola Tesla, Reginald Fessenden, and others. RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports. Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help the station evaluate the signal strength and quality of transmissions. RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener. RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at http://www.techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers, but also from its general listening audience. Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl @ rfa.org and for anyone without Internet access, reception reports can be mailed to: Reception Reports, Radio Free Asia, 2025 M. Street NW, Suite 300, Washington DC 20036, USA. Upon request, RFA will also send a copy of the current broadcast schedule and a station sticker (via Richard A. Re 8-048: I think the megawatt transmitter is a replacement for an existing Russian one. There was evidently an RFQ or Tender request last summer, because one of the vendors asked us to look at some aspects of the antenna system, and it is a Russian one. It is an "AADC-1 with Wave Impedance of 170 ohms." As it is useable anywhere in the band (like many Russian designs) I wasn't provided with the frequency, however! Even the late 1990's Russian transmitters still used high level plate modulation with Class B modulators and class C RF amplifiers, and even if equipped with "Tyler Circuit" waveshaping networks, their overall efficiency is poor. Replacement with modern equipment is very cost effective because of the power savings (Ben Dawson, Hatfield-Dawson, WA, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BELARUS. I don't know what else will have quite as big a variety as the old format (Jeff Kenyon, MI, April 20, The NRC AM mailing list via DXLD) CFCO AM & FM changed to country format on March 10 at 11:00 (if my memory serves me correctly) but I didn't know about until 2 weeks later, as every time I had heard them, they had a hockey game going on. CFCO-FM is only licensed to transmit at 250 watts, which normally only covers a several mile radius around Chatham. Once about two years ago, the Hepburn Tropo index was at 5.5 one morning and I heard them for 45 minutes before losing the signal. I figure by air miles, that I am about 30 miles away. Can't speak for the reason why they did this, as there is a new station on 92.7 Leamington that also plays country music, and which has nothing to do with the station in London, also on 92.7 that plays country. Also CFCO (630) also gets out much better than CKWW (580) in Windsor. 73 de (Joe Miller, KJ8O, Troy MI, ibid.) CFCO has been a variety format station up until a month ago. The AM has been around much longer then the FM, and I only got 92.9 one time myself in summer, and the band was really opened. FM in Detroit is getting harder and harder with more stations from Canada taking to the air between our channels (Jeff Kenyon, ibid.) JKi5384486@aol.com wrote: ``Sad situation. The big 63 covers some serious territory and they sounded good. Too bad they didn't split and go country with the FM; it's a waste to simulcast.`` CFCO-FM (actually CFCO-1-FM) is licensed as a "transmitter" of CFCO. It *must* simulcast the AM - it's not allowed to split. In Canada, a given station may have more than one transmitter. Each transmitter must be approved by the technical folks, and the coverage area must be approved by the non-technical folks (it's kinda as if there were two FCCs. One would be responsible for deciding that 1100 kHz at 10,000 watts was an acceptable facility in Las Vegas, and the other responsible for deciding which of ten applicants would be allowed to build that facility). The process for approval of an additional transmitter for an existing station is considerably easier than that for authorizing a completely new station. The CRTC usually won't solicit competing applications when an additional transmitter is requested -- they will if a completely new station is applied for. There are several similar situations elsewhere in Canada. For example, in Oshawa, where CKDO-1580 has a second transmitter CKDO-FM-1 on 107.7 (by normal policy this station should be CKDO-1-FM!). Or, in Winnipeg, where CBW-990 and CKSB-1050 each have additional transmitters CBW-1-FM 89.3 and CKSB-10-FM 90.5 (in the latter case, CKSB-10 instead of CKSB- 1 because there are nine more FM transmitters elsewhere in Manitoba). In all of these cases, if the FM stations wished to carry separate programming they'd have to take out completely new licenses (though possibly specifying the same technical facilities) and probably compete with other applicants for completely new stations. – (Doug Smith W9WI, Pleasant View, TN EM66, ibid.) It seems like there are a lot of format flips in Canada. One station will trade formats with another (Jeff Kenyon, ibid.) Scott Fybush brings up another reason they didn't split the FM: it would have put CFCO's owners (Blackburn Radio) over the ownership limits. In Canada, one company may only own three stations in a market, of which only two may be on the same band (2 AMs & one FM, or two FMs and one AM. With occasional exceptions in Quebec when both official languages are involved). Blackburn already owns CKUE-FM 95.1 and CKSY-FM 94.3 in Chatham. CFCO- FM would be the (impermissible) 3rd FM if it originated its own programs. By operating as a transmitter of the AM station it doesn't count against the 2-FM-station limit. The CRTC will deny a FM transmitter of an AM station if they think it's being proposed as a "back door" to getting a 3rd FM. For example, the recent application for a 100 kW transmitter of CJOB-680 on 106.3 in Winnipeg. – (Doug Smith W9WI, Pleasant View, TN EM66, ibid.) ** CAYMAN ISLANDS. RADIO CAYMAN - 32 YEARS Cayman Net News April 21, 2008 By Kathy Miller After what began as a small, three-studio operation, broadcasting from half inch analog tape machines, 8-track recorders and record players, Radio Cayman 89.9 FM has seen tremendous growth from the first day of operations on 12 April 1976, to present day, 32 years later. The start of Radio Cayman proved to be a challenge, as records indicate that the first consultancy report proposing a government owned and operated broadcasting station, was lost in a fire that also destroyed the old Government House. The struggle to open the station continued, as the equipment took over six months to arrive in Grand Cayman from the United Kingdom due to a series of shipping delays. But finally, in April of 1976, Radio Cayman sent out its first testing programme through the 75-foot antennae behind the current Broadcasting House on Elgin Avenue in George Town. . . [much more, illustrated] http://www.caymannetnews.com/news-6823--5-5--.html (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) As station manager, Loxley Banks had many duties I'm sure. I have a QSL from Radio Cayman on 1555 signed by no less than Mr Banks (Jerry Lenamon, Waco, ibid.) ** CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC [non?]. James, You are in a location where it is very difficult to get accurate monitoring info, so whatever you can provide, even if not timely, will be very welcome! I wonder how well you can hear Radio ICDI from Central African Republic, on 6030, vs. interference, such as Radio Oromiya from Ethiopia? (Glenn Hauser to James MacDonell, via DXLD) Glenn, Sorry I cannot give a better answer to your question (though I have been a shortwave listener for many years, I am not an experienced monitor). Local noise in my current location makes listening to 6030 difficult. Some of the time I can hear two stations on the same frequency. I have observed the stronger signal closing at 1800 UT with a good signal. Unfortunately I have not been able to get an identification or identify the language (though I think I heard French numbers). By 1900 I am hearing a station in what sounds like Arabic. I'll let you know if I sort it all out! (James MacDonell, Niger State, NW Nigeria, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I have also asked him about 7120, Hargeysa, and/or Chad? ** COSTA RICA. 5954.134, unidentified ELCOR transmitter, Guápiles; as per Raúl Saavedra's tip regarding this reactivating, noted here 2126- 2200 April 21, 2008. Signal was nearly local level, with Madonna; Shakira; and unidentified Spanish male concert songs. Presumed Radio Taiwan International via Okeechobee, FL up at 2159, but ELCOR was still there. I had to leave the receivers at this point, but upon return at 2210, no trace of ELCOR. I suspect this is now 2100-2200. I'm rarely home prior to 2100 to confirm, but I am sure Raúl can confirm. This was well-heard on both the NRD-535 and ICOM IC-R75, but better yet, the new ICF-7600GR with whip captured the signal quite well in the room. Once Okeechobee came up, signal on all receivers was squat though. Still I must ask: who is behind this, and what is the purpose? (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, April 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Well Terry, you have been more fortunate than me today. Was checking around what looks like their new sked in which I tuned them for just one day, 2130-2230, but nothing heard and that was after 2200. You said you got better reception with your portable Sony than with your NRD. You know that is like saying a Hyundai is able to overcome a BMW. Who is exactly behind all this isn't clear yet. I pointed out last year that is unlikely a religious group. I can't imagine one of those testing with secular groups like Maná and Shakira. Frankly, a friend of mine at Control Nacional de Radio seemed to fake the situation, telling me he didn't knew what was all about. I'll to insist one of these days. 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, ibid.) ** CROATIA. Hi Glenn! My observations were verified today by the transmitter operator OIV, that the mediumwave frequencies 774 kHz / 783 kHz / 1125 kHz and 1143 kHz were closed down. So the only remaining mediumwave frequencies for Glas Hrvatske are 1134 kHz (1250- 0530 UT) and 594 kHz in DRM (0700-1500 UT). 73, (Patrick Robic, Austria, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hallo! 73, (Patrick Robic, Austria, April 21, A-DX via Kai Ludwig, DXLD) The Croatian transmitters on 774, 783, 1125 and 1143 have been closed down as of this month. Still on air is Zadar on 1134 with Glas Hrvatske programming. 1557 with Radio Osijek could still be on air as well, at least http://www.hrt.hr/hr/radioosijek/Index.htm still shows it, and I think the jumble I have right now on this frequency includes a third signal besides Fontbonne and Sitkunai. The 1125 transmitter was infamous for producing strong mixing products with one of the co-located shortwave transmitters, run in the 49 mB. These fell in the 60 mB, and back in the nineties even a professional monitoring service mistook the mix for an intended transmission (Kai Ludwig, Germany, April 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA [non]. From April 18-19, Croatian Radio via DTK on 7285 changed to these three overlapping transmissions: 2300-0300 Wertachtal 125 kW, 255 degrees C&SAm 2300-0300 Wertachtal 125 kW, 300 degrees ENAm 0100-0500 Nauen 125 kW, 320 degrees WNAm Any echoes? Wonder if any other CRI relays or even RHC frequencies are missing in other dayparts?`` I think it was Friday the 18th that RHC was not audible in English on 6000 up to its normal sign off of 0700. (Sometimes it carries on with something else after the hour). It was on air on the 19th with a good signal, but parallel 6060, although strong, had a very loud rasping buzz in the audio, so could need attention pretty soon (Noel R. Green (NW England), April 19, HCDX via DXLD) ** CUBA. 11760 making it nicely to the Toronto, Canada area during the local afternoon hours according to several very nice reports sent by listeners in that part of Canada that are members of the Ontario DX Association. The e-mail messages tell me that the 11760 transmitter has nice audio and that the signal level is quite good there during the whole afternoon Havana local time transmission. By the way, we are testing 11760 with another antenna from 0500 to 0700 UT with our regular English language broadcast, in parallel with 6060 and 9550 kiloHertz (Arnie Coro, CO2KK, RHC DXers Unlimited April 19 via DXLD) 11760 reception here after 0500 varies widely, depending on how the MUF is cooperating, from absent to very strong (gh, OK) ** CUBA. So much for my recent remark that R. Martí sticks strictly to its schedule. April 21 at 1226 it was still going on 5980, along with jamming; modulation stopped abruptly at 1230 and OC for another minute until 1231*. This transmission is registered to end at 1200, and I have often heard the DCJC still running on 5980 at least until 1300. April 21 in several 19m bandscans before and after 1400, RHC was totally absent from 15370. At 1441 I could hear something else on 15370, in S Asian language! Per EiBi A08 this is YFR via Nauen in Gujrati, followed at 15-16 by Tamil (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also VENEZUELA [non] ** CZECHIA. It`s a little early for most NAm listeners, but R. Prague`s 2130 English broadcast on 11600 comes in quite well. This transmission is 100 kW, 310 degrees from Litomysl site in Czechia, to CIRAF zones 7 thru 10. April 21 at 2136 was an item about the future of the Christian Democratic Party --- apparently the one in Moravia. Which makes me wonder, what`s this awful mixture of politix and religion in western Europe? I think there are CD parties in several countries, notably Germany. Is it just a meaningless name now, or do you really have to be a Christian to belong? What if the party`s platform matches your views, yet you are one of the burgeoning number of Moslems (let alone Jews) in Europe? Even in America, the momentum of Separation of Church and State, so far has insured there is no ``Christian Republican Party``, at least not by that name. 2143:30 into sports news, and away I went (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ECUADOR. Re 8-048: I also listened Saturday (April 19) to 17575. I did'nt tune to the frequency until about 1715, so missed the earlier Somali transmission. There was no broadcast audible at 1715, but a carrier came up at 1728:45 and programming commenced a few seconds after 1730. The signal was poor and fading, and no ID was heard, but music was 'African style', and the lady announcer sounded to be in an African language too. Now 6085 and 6190 are registered together with "Jülich 100 kW" on 6005 by Bundesnetzagentur, without the infamous remark "for info". But does this mean that the BNetzA reps at the HFCC conferences really try to keep other transmitter operators away from these frequencies? Btw, "FM" for Radio 700 means flea power of 50 milliwatts, cf. http://www.ukwtv.de/sender-tabelle/UKW/Deutschland/Nordrhein-Westfalen.htm#Clarholz The only private (i.e. not public broadcasting, universities, military or temporary) stations allowed on FM in Nordrhein-Westfalen with more than 50 watts are the local stations of their special model, and with the exception of Aachen these are in practice merely affiliates of Radio NRW at Oberhausen, with only a few hours of own programming. Btw btw, a mighty 50 watt outlet (101.7 MHz) had been put on tender at Cologne recently, but it is believed that this invitation of applications was merely for the gallery, because anyway Domradio (a station run there by the Catholic church, also broadcasting via satellite) will get it (Kai Ludwig, Germany, April 20, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Kölner Dom should make a nice antenna tower (gh) ** GERMANY. Re 8-048, Frankfurt AFN: The 873 AFN 150 kW facility has not operated with the proper antenna pattern for the past 12 or 15 years after an ill-advised attempt to replace the power divider system. In 2006 Tom King (president of Kintronic Laboratories) and I inspected the site, and recommended that the feed system be modified and replaced, with the new system using coaxial line and having the power division/phasing at the center tower rather than in the transmitter building. I believe that this is the work now underway, conducted by a local contractor if my information is correct. It's a pretty extensive effort, and will require substantial periods of temporary operation, probably omni-directionally using different towers as the work progresses. The transmitter in service is a 150 kW Nautel consisting of three 50 kW units combined (Ben Dawson, Hatfield- Dawson, WA, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. Hi Kai, I was anticipating much more comment from you on what`s in the RBI blog (Glenn to Kai Ludwig, Wilsdruff, via DXLD) Good morning, trouble is, it's mostly about English, and somehow nobody knows all those people who worked there. But above all it remains to be seen what became of the attempt to contact Robin Mitchell who obviously in 1990 was just 31 years old. The vita on his website omits any reference to broadcasting, and this males me wonder if ... but it would be really inappropriate to speculate here. What can be said to the individual entries: 2008-02-10 - 08:47:48: This BBCM report is a bit misleading. All info I have at hand (and it has been explained in the last English broadcast of RBI as well, if I heard it right while struggling with the Flash player on the Chinese server) indicates that the Nauen, Königs Wusterhausen and Wiederau transmitters relayed Deutsche Welle from local midnight sharp. I've been told that the switch had even been made with transmitters on air, at least at Nauen where the guys did not miss to roll tape (no, I don't have a copy of it, but have been told that such a recording exists, and it has been described as "quite brutal" if I recall the conversation correct). Technically this religious service coverage should have been Deutsche Welle, taking the same outside broadcast than the other stations mentioned there. The last German transmission used the Ennio Morricone soundtrack from the Once Upon a Time in the West movie, and it contained the same addresses by Klaus Fischer (what an embarrassing Wendehals!) and Dieter Weirich. 2008-02-14 - 13:37:08: Wolfram Heß did freelance work for Deutsche Welle but was not employed there. 2008-02-24 - 21:58:44: What became later OPS first went on air as "Berlin Island Station" (rather than iceland). The production of OPS took place under clandestine-like circumstances, probably due to the announcers using pseudonyms. And it appears that it indeed had some success, one hears about US soldiers who were wondering that this station has great music, "but what's this shit communist propaganda"? 2008-03-04 - 17:06:30: Deutscher Soldatensender 935 had nothing to do with KPD members (that was Deutscher Freiheitssender 904) but was run by GDR radio employees. Afterwards the closure of this station they mysteriously reappeared at Nalepastraße, and a common kind of talk was "well, you know where I was, don't you?". Some of them, including program host Elisabeth Süncksen http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/63/DDR-F-AKSuncksen02-w.PNG also went to the TV news department. 2008-03-23 - 11:30:30: Hannelore Steer will retire on May 1st. Remember that Babis Charalampopoulos said that it is a data base which he uses to set up his frequencies for the current broadcasting season. Re 8-048: KOSU and timing of local news segments: WHYY-FM in Philadelphia used to air a locally-produced half hour report at 6:29 PM (yep, that was the time) weeknights. This was before "Marketplace" was on the air. WHYY-FM made the conscious decision to drop the half hour and instead embed local programming into ATC and ME. This approach is generally encouraged by NPR in order to give these programs a more "local" sound. I remember when the segment timings of ME and ATC were adjusted to accommodate these local cutaways. It's just a guess on my part, but I speculate that many listeners tuned out when it came time for the local half-hours...this way, with content embedded into ME / ATC, more people didn't wander off (Richard Cuff / Allentown, PA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) No doubt that is what happens, but I continue to object to it, as I did when KUNM dropped their half-hour evening news show (gh, DXLD) ** OKLAHOMA. A few years ago the Voice of Russia started a half-hour weekly Russian language programme “Hello Ukraine” relayed via the Ukrainian Radio’s 3-d channel “Radio Kul’tura”. There is a hope that the Voice of Russia will launch a similar daily programme in the Ukrainian language, as well as the Radio Ukraine International will launch a programme in Russian. And here are some logs from the OPEN-DX forum. The following message is from Alexey Zinevich from Minsk, Belarus: “From my yesterday receptions: Radio Emmanuil (or CVC) in Ukrainian has remained on the short waves in the new season too, and was heard on the frequency of 9750 kHz at 1845 with SINPO 55555. As we see, the time of transmission has changed as well – to a later hour.” I want to add here that the summer A08 schedule of Radio Emmanuil is: 1600-1700 on 11855 kHz; 1700-1900 on 9750 kHz. And yes, 13865 Rampisham -is- surprisingly robust here too at those hours. BTW - I about jumped out my right-handed driver's seat when tooling down some back roads during a UK tour last spring, when I came upon the Rampisham site, now managed by VT I think. Impressive nonetheless, it's situated in a very pretty area of Dorset. Placed in such a Tolkein-esque landscape it's a bit of a shock just to stumble over. My navigator definitely didn't get it. Lastly, since so many services are closing now, I'm making a point a emailing stations and offering some feedback. George is not an owner and does not speak for the owner, but the official position of Mike Parker is that KAIJ will be returning to the air once repairs are made. Judging from the previous article, the Venezuelans were concerned about interference a megawatt on 1240 would cause to nearby LA stations, but I saw nothing about what it would do to the hundreds of US stations on 1240, one of the six `graveyard` channels, with a max power of 250 watts at night (or by then increased to 1000?). It`s an interesting propagational question whether a single megawatt transmitter that far away would significantly increase the QRM problem, i.e. the effective coverage radius of any such small station, compared to the QRM it already gets from all the other US stations piled up on the frequency. For DXers without a nearby 1240 station, I bet the YV would often have topped the QRM level – and just wait for auroral conditions (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** VENEZUELA [non]. Sunday April 20 started looking for Aló Presidente relay via CUBA. At 1405, 13750 with very good signal, mentioning ``Venezolana de Televisión`` ID just as I tuned in, but then to RHC IS and theme, back to RHC IS, but it was marred, hiccuping three times after 1408; at 1410 it even went off-key briefly. Was this on a tape momentarily off-speed? 1411 to martial Cuban NA, 1412 more IS with hiccups, then the ``gentler, softer`` Cuban NA version which is more of an RHC theme song. 1413 sign-on announcement as RHC, giving these frequencies: 13760, and from 9 am ``hora normal de Cuba`` [which is not in effect now, instead DST], 13680; 11760, 11805, 12000, 9559, 9600, 6000, 6180, and from 9 am, 15370. Yes! The announcer said `9559`, not obvious to him that this was a typo for 9550! Sounds like this is what should have run only at *1100 for RHC itself. At 1415, fragment of Fidel speech about Venezuela, ``El Pulso de la Historia`` implying Chávez is his historical successor [as a dictator for life --- well, almost], by way of introducing the usual RHC run-up program to ``A,P``, ``Mundo Siete``, week in review, starting with oil topping $110/barrel. Recheck at 1432, Mundo 7 still going and now I looked for parallels. Found 11875, 11670 and at 1437, 13680. If on 17 MHz, not propagating. All three were much weaker than 13750. All of them had an echo with 13750, not exactly synchronized, but not exactly synchronized with each other, either. Recheck at 1501, Venezuelan-sounding music but RHC ID, and starting another RHC fill program, ``Somos Jóvenes``. Too busy to keep checking until I retuned 13750 at 1601, just in time to hear the Cuban (martial) NA ending, and to open carrier, as apparently the service was just signing off. Did Hugo ever appear? ISSN 1399-8218 PRESS RELEASE FROM THE DANISH SHORTWAVE CLUB INTERNATIONAL (DSWCI) http://www.dswci.org NEW SURVEY AVAILABLE: The 51 years old DSWCI which counts experienced DX-ers in 33 countries all over the world as members, has just issued the 10th Edition of its annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey. This survey is divided into four parts: Part 1: The 36th edition of the Tropical Bands Survey covering all ACTIVE broadcasting stations on 2300 - 5700 kHz. Part 2: Domestic stations on international shortwave bands above 5700 kHz broadcasting to a domestic audience. Part 3: All ACTIVE Clandestine shortwave stations are listed with schedules and identifications. Part 4: Deleted frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz which have not been reported heard during the past five years, but may reappear. This new Survey is based upon many official sources and DX-bulletins. A08 schedules are included when available. In order to make the DBS reliable, our own monitors around the world have checked throughout the period May 2007 - April 2008, if each of the 1050 station frequencies is on the air. ACTIVE stations are marked with an A (”Regular”), B (”Irregular”) or C (”Sporadic”) in the list. D means ”Likely inactive”. A unique feature is the right column called ”Last log”. It shows the last month and year before DBS deadline on April 15, 2008 when the particular station was reported logged by a DX-er somewhere in the world. This is another way of indicating the current audibility of the station. To make this DBS up-to-date and user-friendly, most frequencies which have not been heard during the past year have been deleted and moved to Part 4. Other useful features for easy identification (ID) are the parallel frequencies and reference to Station ID slogans. Four sample extracts from the DBS-10 are shown the next page. Reviews can be found on http://www.dswci.org All buyers of DBS-10 will get a username and password to the monthly updates on the tropical bands published as "Tropical Bands Monitor" on our website. Emilio y Julio, Club Dx S500, Valencia (España) P.D.: El archivo pdf pesa 10 MB pero contiene más de 100 imágenes, todo un lujo (José Miguel Romero, Spain, dxldyg via DXLD) Direct link: http://www.upv.es/~csahuqui/julio/s500/15ab2008.pdf Nicely done bulletin, obviously a lot of work to put together, and many nice QSLs and other illustrations, but unfortunately of rather low resolution and some of the text is illegible. Seems to depend on material originally in Spanish and has not availed itself e.g. of anything at all from gh or DXLD. Many (all?) old logs of José Miguel Romero are published, but as a thrice yearly (cuatrimestral, next one Aug 31), much of that is now out of date, originating in the B-07 season (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) WORLD OF HOROLOGY +++++++++++++++++ "MECCA TIME" SHOULD REPLACE GMT? Muslim scientists and clerics have said that GMT should be replaced with Mecca Time because the holy Muslim city in Saudi Arabia is the real centre of the earth. They say GMT was "imposed" on the world by the British when they were a colonial power and it was time things changed. See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7359258.stm (Chris Greenway, UK, April 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) If so, it should be local mean (``sun``) time, not standard time; IIRC, the Saudis were quite late in going to standard time exactly one hour from other timezones. That would make Mecca Mean Time a lot more fun to convert around the world. After all, PBUH never heard of the concept of standard time (Glenn Hauser, PBUM, DX LISTENING DIGEST) DIGITAL BROADCASTING DRM: CROATIA; ECUADOR; NEW ZEALAND; UNID 5950 ++++++++++++++++++++ DTV: ALASKA IBOC: OKLAHOMA PROPAGATION +++++++++++ "SHORT TROPO" SEASON This is the time of the year for what I call "short tropo" east of the Rockies. The temperature swings around sunrise and sunset, coupled with abundant humidity from the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico, can produce some short-lived tropo openings of up to 300 miles or so. This morning was an example. I tuned to 162.40 MHz around 7:15 am --- about my local sunrise [CDT = 1215 UT] --- to hear NOAA weather radio, and found the Austin station, normally loud and dominant here, getting serious interference from WXK34 in Victoria, Texas. All other channels had tropo stations trying to come through, and I managed to snag IDs from WWF91, Llano on 162.425, WXL26, Port O'Connor on 162.475, and WNG523 in Dilley on 162.500. All of these were overriding the normally dominant stations on those channels. The opening abruptly closed around 7:30 as the sun climbed higher in the sky and the troposphere settled down. I used my Yaesu FT-60 two meter HT for these receptions and was able to "null" other stations by tilting the FT-60, thus affecting antenna polarization. This phenomenon also affects FM and UHF TV, so if you need some stations in that 100 to 300 miles distant range be alert for this enhanced propagation at sunrise and sunset (Harry Helms W5HLH, Smithville, TX EL19 http://harryhelmsblog.blogspot.com/ April 20, ABDX via DXLD) ghost towns ###
