VALE KEITH ASHTON --- Keith Ashton passed away suddenly on the 21st of June 2008. John [Wright] writes: He was a member of our club, a great knowledgeable radio man. My involvement with Keith started off in 1995 in Caringbah with the 2AM 1620 studio and Matilda search engine through first link including this internet address. Keith was such a generous man, that gave away Greyhound passes on air for our DX Club in 1996 when we had taken over from Melbourne with only 103 members. Keith got us back on our feet. I still have those 2AM reception reports. Keith and I shared a common nemesis, in type 1 diabetes. However, this didn't deter him from doing all things radio. Lately he had been working on a the old frequency in the 49 mb, getting a shortwave transmitter licence. His words and laughing, will ring in my ears for ever. Vale Keith. A great Aussie radio man. There is a big article in the magazine pulled off the web. The website indicates the contact for tributes is Ryan Maguire, so I am not sure if we wrote the article or not (July Australian DX News via DXLD) Viz.: Keith Ashton, 1944—2008 REMEMBERING THE MAN WHO INVENTED NARROWCAST RADIO [illustrated] This is the simple biography of a media-man who went from being the youngest newsreader on Australian television, to the man who created more radio licenses than any other person in Australian history. He invented narrowcast broadcasting and is a person well known to the broadcasting Industry. . . http://www.isonliveradio.com/iarba/lifemembers/keith_ashton.html (July Australian DX News via DXLD) Was with Double V Radio, applicant for 120m SW licences, and a frequent poster on the DXing.info fora (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) Thanks Glenn for all those postings. I wonder what will happen to Keith's stations now that he has gone. I guess that's the end of Double V Shortwave Australia. I checked 4835 & 5025 too, but no trace of VL8A & VL8K respectively. I didn't bother to check the 120 m band as it's simply too noisy up here in Lisbon (Carlos Gonçalves, Portugal, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Noted the 4910 VL8T Tennant Creek also here at the same time. Not at all uncommon for one of these every now and then fail to make the frequency shift at scheduled time. I understand the shift is automated and fails to work sometimes for some reasons. 73, (Jari Savolainen, Kuusankoski, Finland, ibid.) Jari, Thanks for the piece of information. Well, it may well be automated - at least the sort of abrupt frequency switch they have certainly makes one believe so -, but can't a station fix such mistakes in almost no time, or do they simply not bother to monitor the channels to see whether everything is right? I guess many a station simply rely too much on automation and expect miracles. 73, (Carlos Gonçalves, ibid.) Carlos, In the case of transmitter site fault there's no matter whether the frequency shift is automated at the site or maybe remote controlled from Darwin or wherever. It needs a technician at the site and I guess it might take some time at those remote places in NT. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the NT shortwave transmitter sites are unmanned. Not many people wrote about this, but RCI is getting on for retirement, with just one daily hour in English to Europe left, and on a single Canadian frequency instead of the strong and reliable European relays (Stefano Valianti, Italy, Southern European Report, July BDXC-UK Comunication via DXLD) Really? I guess you refer to 15235, which BTW also serves CNAm well off the back, but per EiBi the 20-21 UT hour to Europe is also on 11765-Sweden, and to WAf, which ought to be audible in Eu too, on 13650-Skelton and 17735 direct from Sackville. This info matches RCI`s own schedule at http://www.rciviva.ca/rci/PDF/RCI-TECH-A08-ENG.pdf Checked at 2020 UT July 1, 15235 was good but 17735 barely audible, tho sometimes adequate. Nothing on 13740. 13760 had been in use for RHC itself until 1500. Usual poor modulation and much weaker than RHC on 13680. Please find listed below NEW information, which I recently received from the Cuban ICRT. I also would like to thank Bill Hepburn for sending the Cuban information he had available from the ITU. That information in itself didn't help much, BUT, coupled with the Cuban information I already had and also the new database that was emailed to me from the Cuban ICRT a few weeks ago, things have really started to come together. Currently, there are 270 LICENSED full power fm's and low power relay stations on the air in Cuba. In addition to that, I recently received the LATEST database from the Haïti Conatel (licensing authority) and suddenly, I am developing quite a list of ACTIVE LICENSED French & Creole FM's operating in Haïti. There are currently 225 LICENSED full power FMs and low power community stations in Haïti. A few notes: the supposed *translator* [or `pirate`] on 92.9 in Cuba that relays Radio Taíno in actuality is a LICENSED station. See below. If you've heard Radio Taíno on 92.9, CMCQ is the station you've heard. For anyone reading this, IF you've encountered any UNided Cuban or Haitian FM stations, contact me OFFLIST and with the new dbase of information, I might just be able to help you solve those UNids. AFN Würzburg transmitter switched off --- Another June 30 closure: The FM outlet of AFN at Würzburg, on 104.9, has been switched off during the late afternoon or early evening. It had been fed by AFN Bavaria at Vilseck since February, AFN Würzburg bid its farewell already with their morning show on January 31. Quite unclear is the situation with 1143. Some observers insist that no mediumwave transmitter is on air at Schweinfurt anymore and this garrison is now served by the Würzburg mediumwave outlet, 30 km away, something on which I commented that if so Würzburg must run more than 300 watts now. And if so this Würzburg transmitter would have to stay on air as long as the Schweinfurt garrison exists, which will be the case for at least another couple of years (Kai Ludwig, Germany, June 30, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Kai appends this post originally made January 13 in the dxldyg, but apparently not in DXLD: (gh) An illustrated article about AFN Würzburg: http://www.schweinfurt.army.mil/sites/news/newspage_111.asp It was a bit of a surprise to some observers that the wind-up of this operation is already under way, but in last October the Faulenberg barracks (also by the Americans usually referred to in German as Faulenberg-Kaserne) had been returned to the German side and the hospital of the US forces (which already in 2005 had been curtailed to a mere first-aid facility) closed down: http://www.army.mil/-news/2007/10/23/5710-faulenberg-returned-to-german-authorities/ http://www.army.mil/-news/2007/11/01/5878-wuerzburg-hospital-sounds-final-retreat/ http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=57182&archive=true And the large 128 hectare Leighton Barracks object, were the AFN studios are located, will be handed over to the responsible German body by next September, so its clearance must be under way by now. The Würzburg university already expressed its interest in establishing facilities there, outlined in this article which starts with a little hypocrisy: We were sorry to learn that the US forces will leave Leighton Barracks, BUT ...: http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/sonstiges/meldungen/single/artikel/eine-chanc/ Some sources say that 104.9 at Würzburg stayed at Leighton Barracks and had not been moved to the Frankenwarte site of Media&Broadcast from where 1143 and TV ch. 47 are operated. RUSSIAN PAPER DISMISSES MEDVEDEV'S CYRILLIC INTERNET PLAN | Text of report by heavyweight Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta on 25 June [Editorial: "Cyrillic phantom. What happens when political logic comes into conflict with technological logic"] Speaking at the 10th World Congress of the Russian Press in Moscow, Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev casually let slip his plans regarding the future of the world wide web - the internet. They are impressive plans, albeit local in scale. Literally local, that is small-town scale. "I think we should do everything in our power to ensure that we are able to secure domain names on the internet in the future in Cyrillic," President Medvedev stated. As we know, he starts every morning by logging on to the net. Which is, in fact, what he was talking about. The main regulatory organ today is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN (Marina del Rey, California). Its mission covers setting parameters for internet protocols and controlling the system of domain names and root servers and the procedure for acquiring domain names. This right is formally delegated to ICANN by the US Department of Commerce, which in turn received it from the Pentagon. The contract between the Department of Commerce and ICANN was recently extended until 2011. Russia has very few representatives on the ICANN committees. This is largely due to the fact that all the proceedings are in English. (For information: Anyone with the appropriate level of technical knowledge can apply to take part in the work of ICANN's council of directors; in 2000 the total number reached 158,000) The idea of introducing multi-language domain names on the net (internet addresses) has long kept certain politicians awake at night - mainly those from so-called developing countries: China, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, Saudi Arabia... And now comes Russia. There are more developed countries in that category too, it is true: Norway and Switzerland, for example. And the argument for all this is "the need to preserve cultural diversity on the internet". In other words, if you cannot type into a browser the three letters www in English, it does not matter. You should be able to write what you like in Russian, Yiddish or Swahili. Or, what's more, in Farsi, Norwegian or Chinese.... "Any attempt to demolish the existing administration of the internet will lead to the destruction of the net," so all more or less responsible experts, including those from the Russian Federation Ministry of Information Technology and Communications [renamed the Ministry of Mass Communications and Telecommunications in May 2008], declare with one voice. "The question of preserving the integrity of the net is a very important one. The net could easily be turned into a conglomerate of unconnected nets." And suddenly we have a clearly articulated plan to separate from the English-language internet. Ideologically, this approach is entirely well-grounded: we only need to recall the home-grown concepts of "energy superpower", "liberal empire" or "sovereign democracy..." And this move to "fence in" our Cyrillic truck garden is being initiated precisely at a time when the country is seeing colossal demand for English lessons (and not just in the major capitals but in the provinces too). All this is nothing but a misconception of the idea of national self-identification in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi: "Giving the masses a knowledge of English means returning them to slavery" (1908). What is the point of destroying the unified system of domain names?! Technically, the idea of a Cyrillic internet is utterly impossible to implement. "Apart from satisfying the national ego, as if anyone needs to do that, this will achieve nothing," experts emphasize. Whereas it really would have value in cultivating the entirely legitimate national pride of Great Russians, since it acknowledges actual reality. In a Rand Corporation report just published, entitled " Is the United States losing its edge in science and technology?", we read that the United States accounts for 40 per cent of world expenditure in science and technology; 38 per cent of patents for new technology obtained by industrially developed countries; 37 per cent of the scientists living in industrially developed countries; 35 per cent of world scientific publications; and 49 per cent of the total number of citations from scientific works. Some 70 per cent of Nobel Prize-winning scientists and 66 per cent of the world's most actively cited authors of scientific works work in the United States. We should get on and work, Gentlemen, and not mess around with Cyrillic phantoms. Source: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Moscow, in Russian 25 Jun 08 (via BBCM via DXLD) ** INTERNATIONAL WATERS. JOURNALIST PAUL HARRIS REMINISCES ABOUT RADIO NORTH SEA INTERNATIONAL Over the next few weeks, allmediascotland.com is to publish, each weekday, extracts from the memoirs of Scottish war correspondent, Paul Harris. ‘More Thrills than Skills: A Half-life in Journalism’, is being scheduled for publication next year. In his younger days, Paul Harris wrote several books on offshore radio. In today’s extract, he reminisces about Radio North Sea International. Read the article: http://www.allmediascotland.com/articles/2762/01072008/more_thrills_than_skills_-_a_half-life_in_journalism_part_nine (July 1st, 2008 - 12:04 UTC by Andy Sennitt, Media Network blog via DXLD) 5 comments so far: 1 Mervyn Hagger July 1st, 2008 - 14:39 UTC The political analysis of Paul Harris as it relates to MEBO, Radio Northsea International and the ill-fated PanAM flight are interesting because he loops it back through a Cold War plan constructed in Poland via a fleet of Communist radio broadcasting ships. The foundation for all of this seems to be a single Dutch newspaper article (allegedly based upon a leaked CIA report), and the personal observations of Mr. Harris which he claims were given by him to one of Britain’s spy agencies. Over the years these words of Mr. Harris have been challenged and I have not seen any additional proof offered by him to support these challenges. Nevertheless they are intriguing since it would appear that the so-called “British beat fleet” of the 1960s was in and of itself a byproduct of a faction of the British Establishment in conjunction with CIA interests. My most recent coedited findings regarding this matter were documented and published in 2007 as a part of New/Old Worlds: Spaces in Transition: The World Tomorrow radio broadcasts to the United Kingdom: 1965-1967?, Univers Enciclopedic, Bucharest. ISBN 978973637159-2. 2 Mike Barraclough July 1st, 2008 - 15:28 UTC How does Federal US law apply to a Swiss Company? There’s a lot more speculation about all this in his book To Be A Pirate King but nothing that can be verified. As we have only recently seen in the Iraq War intelligence information is unreliable. The evidence linking Mebo to Lockerbie has also recently been discredited: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/sep/02/theairlineindustry.libya A second appeal is now to be heard. 3 Mervyn Hagger July 1st, 2008 - 15:43 UTC Mike raises the basic problem with many of the “pirate radio” publications: lack of credibility via academic standards of reporting. Paul Harris originally published his first work shortly after the demise of the original offshore stations and his writings were mainly unverified and inaccurate newspaper cuttings strung together without footnotes, references or a decent index. However, in the RNI-PanAM linkage Paul claims first hand knowledge which makes him a central player more than a journalist. Even then Paul has yet to provide documentation to support his own claims and if he can do this by unmasking the people he claims to have been working with in British intelligence, that would at least provide us all with something to examine and unravel. 4 lou josephs July 1st, 2008 - 16:15 UTC The problem is that no one anywhere has written a “history” of pirate radio. Clandestine radio is a far different thing and mixing the two appears to be the issue here. 5 Mervyn Hagger July 1st, 2008 - 16:28 UTC Lou, you may be correct is referring to a single “history” (singular), but there are historical records meeting academic standards that have been published and which cover aspects of events. On the other hand clandestine radio and pirate radio sometimes merge into one and the same subject and again there are credible works that do exist to document aspects of this subject http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/journalist-paul-harris-reminsces-about-radio-north-sea-international#comments (Media Network blog via DXLD) ** IRAN [non]. He said, “as it is now, we have transmitters that are as old as 40 years which are also analogue while everything in the world has gone digital.” The FRCN Boss also lamented that the lack of the modern broadcast equipment have negatively affected the services of the Corporation adding that this can be noted in its poor revenue generation capacity because according to him no advertiser will want to place his advert in a not too stable broadcast. He however, said the Corporation has done its best to stay above board, pointing out that few new modern broadcast equipment have been procured and installed. He added that the problems faced by the Corporation was that, “our men here are still learning how to manage the equipments as soon as they are done our broadcast quality will definitely improve.” On the FRCN Zonal Stations in Ibadan and Enugu, the Director-General declared that, “these are dead because of lack funds to replace the equipments that have gone completely bad, the only short wave station still on air is Kaduna, that too is down for now due to damage to the transmitter by rainstorm, but our engineers are right now there trying to fix it and very soon it will come back on air.” While reacting to complaints by some individuals and political parties over converges he said, “people must complain because you cannot satisfy everybody, we have done our best to ensure that the code of political broadcast was strictly adhered to. We give equal air time to all political parties and to our credit, INEC and others gave us commendation for the fair but accurate coverage of the last general elections.” The Director General then assured that the Corporation will ensure that Nigerians and other listeners of the network all over the world got the best quality programming that they desired just as he added that from now on FRCN will prove that it is the largest network in Africa (via Kim Elliott, DXLD) ** OMAN. 15140, R. Once in that page, click on "Rede de Emissores - RTP 1" and the mainland transmitters list is shown: http://www.anacom.pt/template12.jsp?categoryId=42730 The one in question is: Muro 2 48,25 67 The frequency is the video one, not the FM carrier for audio. The 2nd list regards the RTP 1 relays, "retransmissores." As to WRTH-TV section, editions 2006-2007-2008, particularly this year's case, the worst one, I know they've got mistakes but that was entirely a WRTH (wrong) decision when, as they said (to me), they chose to have all the TV sections prepared by Bernd Trutenau. The WRTH even stopped including channel lists years ago, but then decided to include one this year, and in the Portuguese case (mainland), page 644, the person in question mixed RTP 1/RTP 2 with the priv. stn SIC, and then omitted TVI channels. The problem with Saudi Arabian transmitters reported last month continued and on June 2 the 15205 transmitter completely wiped out the 19 metre band again here as it is beamed straight at us. I emailed some observations to the High Frequency Co-Ordination Conference office, my email concluded: I have been an active shortwave listener for over 40 years and this is the first time I have heard a transmitter causing this level of interference to other users. I note that Saudi Arabian Radio and Television is a member of the HFCC. I would therefore ask that you contact them about this matter and request that these transmitters be taken off the air and repaired. Clearly the continued operation of these transmitters is against your main objective of efficient and economical use of the short-wave radio spectrum, and the improvement of radio reception of short-wave broadcast transmissions world-wide. Checking June 9 and subsequently the problem had been cleared. I also later received an email from a member of their HFCC delegation asking me to confirm the transmitters were now causing no interference and requesting MP3/WAV files if the problem was still there (Mike Barraclough, England, July World DX Club Contact via DXLD) Checks on 7 June found all frequencies clear from buzzing sound. Re 8-073, 8-074: BBC WORLD SERVICE: ROMANIAN LANGUAGE OFFERING TO CLOSE --- Tara Conlan, Thursday June 26 2008 http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jun/26/bbc.radio BBC World Service is to close its Romanian language offering after 68 years of broadcasting. The Romanian service will cease broadcasting from August 1 following a review of BBC World Service's language services and their funding. Closing the Romanian service will save £1.3m a year at a time when the BBC said the World Service was operating within a "very tight financial framework". The BBC said the decision had been made for financial reasons and after "consideration of audience need to continue broadcasts, the changing media landscape in Romania and the declining impact of the service". Romanian listeners get a news and current affairs service that broadcasts for almost four hours a day on radio and also runs on a complementary website. The closure will affect 46 staff - 30 in Bucharest, Romania, four in Chisinau, Moldova, and 12 in London. This is the last of the BBC's non-English language services specifically aimed at countries that are EU members. BBC World Service's funding settlement, agreed with the UK government and the BBC Trust, gave increased resources for new projects, such as television services for BBC Arabic and BBC Persian. But it also imposed a tough savings target of around 3% a year to meet rising costs of existing services. The BBC also blamed the "scale of the competition in radio and all media" in Romania and the fact that several of the country's major FM stations no longer carry World Service output. Broadcasts in Romanian for the Republic of Moldova will also cease, as the Moldovan side of the operation "cannot be sustained without the infrastructure of BBC Romanian". BBC World Service director Nigel Chapman said it had been a tough decision to make. "Like the other European services we closed three years ago, BBC Romanian had its roots in the Second World War. It has served its audiences with distinction through the Communist era to the present day," Chapman said. "The contribution of all BBC Romanian staff has been immense: serving Romanians with innovation and commitment for 68 years. We will strongly support their efforts to find alternative employment. "The quality of the current output is of the highest standard. But Europe has changed, fundamentally, since the early nineties; and with the rapidly declining audiences in Romania we can no longer justify continuing the service." The BBC axed 10 foreign-language services in 2006, part of a shift in emphasis that saw £19m pumped into its new Arabic TV news channel, which launched in March. National Union of Journalists official Paul McLaughlin said: "It's a shock announcement, particularly given the fact people felt the service was safe. "Coming at the same time as the service's offshoring plans it's completely unacceptable and we think it is the dismantling of the BBC World Service bit by bit." "ProPublica.org aims to make up some of the ground lost to journalism by the current crisis of advertising revenues bleeding to the internet. In particular, it seeks to preserve the skills and value of investigative reporting - one of the first casualties of cuts by dint of its relative costliness. It burst on to the US media scene last week with its first major investigation - an expose of how the US- backed Arabic language TV network Alhurra is counter-productive to US interests, poorly watched and a waste of $500m of public money. The investigation was produced as a documentary and aired on the prestigious TV magazine 60 Minutes, causing ripples through Congress and shaking up the Bush administration-backed network." The Guardian, 30 June 2008. Posted: 30 Jun 2008 (See http://kimelli.nfshost.com/index.php?id=4333 for linx, via DXLD) ProPublica's investigation of Alhurra does have weaknesses: 1) The small number of transgressions that it found during a lengthy monitoring period are not enough to brand Alhurra as biased. 2) The Alhurra audience sizes are not bad for a non-Arab competitor; using the "station you wtach most often" as the only measure is particularly misleading. 3) ProPublica cannot prove that payments to contributors by Alhurra constitute government influence; there are similar public- funded but independent broadcasting corporations in Europe and elsewhere who pay contributors but are not dismissed as government propaganda (Kim Andrew Elliott, ibid.) ** U S A. `Tuned` in WRMI on webcast, Monday June 30 at 1500 for scheduled HCJB DX Partyline as in WRMI grid, but instead heard a ``sorpresa musical`` from Radio República, which continued past another WRMI ID at 1600. (Glenn Hauser, June 30, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: Overnight AM Redirection - Time to Stop Playing Games June 2nd, 2008 admin Posted in broadcasting | No Comments » Overnight AM was built to do one thing and that was to be offered up to the public as a replacement for the Art Bell abandoned Coast to Coast AM now hosted by George Norrey. But things are changing… Honestly, ladies and gentleman, I’m sick and tired of having my civil liberties stripped away from me while attempting to be politically correct in regard to all the people and subjects that I cover on Overnight AM. Some may consider this action and new direction to be a death blow to the program, but I feel like it’s necessary to pursue the subject material in a realistic manner while taking the subjects seriously. Think about it, how can you take the subject of ufo’s or alien abductions seriously without being able to ask hard, sometimes terminal, questions of the speaker or the guest? You can’t. You have to go beyond the entertainment aspects and into straight forward talk and questions to get to the bottom of things and that is what we have in mind with Overnight AM. In short, we’re cutting through the bull. Art Bell was a informer. George Norry is a entertainer. Overnight AM and Lan Lamphere has been a little bit of both. But not now! Overnight AM is a no nonsense, in your face, fact finding vehicle for the human brain. This is our endeavor as of June 02, 2008. We can’t be honest with you unless we’re honesty with ourselves first and foremost. As of today.. the gloves are off. And remarkably we’ve had three guest speakers cancel on us from the UFO field without explanation as to why. That’s fine with us- just more fodder for the heaping pile of crap… Overnight AM and HollowFX Tighten Up the Act- and the Bandwidth June 2nd, 2008 admin Posted in broadcasting | No Comments » Overnight AM and the HollowFX Talk Radio Network are tightening up our act by removing public relay access to the live stream(s) of all the radio shows that you hear on the Internet coming from our audio feeds. Why? People, and start up internet feeds, are spoofing our bandwidth and relaying our audio feed on their own network(s) which means we are loosing listeners as well as inventory used to promote our sponsors. Hey.. we’re popular! As of June 02, 2008 the Hollow FX Talk Radio network is no longer available for public relay. You must contact our studios to request a contract, username and password from Lamp Here Productions, LLC in order to relay our network feed. If you’re interested in relaying the HollowFX Talk Radio Network please call 866-585-9734 Mon-Fri 9:00 Am- 5:00 PM Central Time. This action will not effect terrestrial radio feeds as a different network is used for delivery. Also, Modavox.com, VoiceAmerica.com and the new Renegade Talk Radio Network is now an authorized relay for the HollowFX Talk Radio Network & Lamp Here Productions, LLC. Tonight I received notice that some listeners of Overnight AM, Hollow FX Radio Network, Dwight Schultz and Mr Don Ecker may have been charged as much as $45.95 for a yearly subscription that does not exist anymore from the Patriot Brigade Radio Network. If you were charged, then you have already received your refund as Lamp Here Productions, LLC canceled that account months ago but that didn’t seem to much matter to the computers that are running PayPal.com. The moment we found out about this we immediately called PayPal.com to find out what the problem was and restore the money that had been illegaly taken from your bank accounts or charged to your credit cards. I’m not saying that PayPal.com did this on purpose because they did not. In fact, the problem laid inside some of the settings that we had created when we set up the subscription service. For that we appologize and we can ‘almost’ promise that it will not happen again. I say ‘almost’ promise because we thought the situation was under control to begin with and it turned out it wasn’t. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced due to our mistake but the problem has been corrected and your money returnned. We hope you will not hold it against us…. WRCI-990, ex-WLGZ --- WRCI-990 in Rochester, NY is not a relay of Radio Canada International (Canada's shortwave service), but religious format, ex-WLGZ. Noted at 0901 with gospel songs and IBOC- flogging ToH ID "WRCI and WRCI-HD, Rochester's Christian radio". Dear God, in Jesus' name please smite IBOC dead!! 73 (Mike Brooker, Toronto, ON, June 30, NRC-AM via DXLD) Crawford Broadcasting, which owns WRCI, is one of the IBOC true believers, which means this one (and their other AMs, such as WPTR 1540 and the 560/810/1220 in Denver) will probably be hashing away for some time to come. That said, WRCI is *so* directional at night that the signal is not clean enough to decode audio here at my QTH, less than a mile south of the Rochester city line, after dark. Even in daylight it can be a tricky catch. I can null the IBOC sidebands almost completely at night here. The flip from "Legends" // WLGZ-FM happened at about 0010 this morning, btw. s (Scott Fybush, ibid.) That is a pathetic signal. When will Crawford and the other IBOC believers realize that this technology does not work and it is time to cut their losses? It also worth noting that the 990 Rochester analog signal gets out very well and dominates the channel here at night when Providence-990 is off due to technical or financial problems. Milspec390 for President! (Marc DeLorenzo, South Dennis, MA http://hometown.aol.com/midcapemarc/myhomepage/profile.html ibid.) Meaning pvz == Paul Vincent Zecchino, which reminds me, have not seen any postings from him in months. Is he OK, or just been banned from the lists I read? (gh, DXLD) The 990 Rochester analog signal is no better than the digital, actually. Because the station came to the 990 spot on the dial so late (1979, moving from a daytimer on 680 in a deal negotiated with Canada to allow CFTR to change transmitter sites and boost power), it ended up with a six-tower site about 18 miles west of downtown Rochester and a night pattern that's a narrow beam aimed east. If you're within the beam - the north side of Rochester, or, evidently, Cape Cod - the Rochester signal's a flamethrower. If you're south of the beam, as I am by just a few miles, it doesn't exist. I literally cannot get a completely clean analog signal from 990 Rochester at night here. That's not a failing of IBOC, just a signal that probably should never have been shoehorned in where it was. s (Scott Fybush, NY, NRC-AM via DXLD) OK, I stand corrected & thanks for info, Scott. But I still hate IBOC! :-) (Marc DeLorenzo, South Dennis, MA, ibid.) ** U S A. A CORKER AT JUNE’S NATIONAL MEDIA REFORM CONFERENCE By Richard S. Towne, KUNM General Manager Bill O’Reilly (Fox News) called the 3,000 people who attended last month’s National Media Reform Conference "fascists," "loons," "unstable people … doing a lot of dam-age to America," "lunatic left," "stridently anti-American," and "loons." Too bad he lumped a bird species in there. That’s just not fair to the loons. But fairness has never been an issue for Fox. The conference took place across three days in Minneapolis. If it gave Mr. O’Reilly this much heartburn, something really good was going on. Bill Moyers (PBS) uncorked a mighty speech at the conference. Moyers called media reform movement "the most significant citizens’ movement to emerge in this new century." Moyers with passion, "You couldn’t find a more revealing measure of the state of the dominant media today than the continuing ubiquitous presence -- on the air and in print -- of the very pundits and experts, self-selected ‘message multipli-ers’ of a disastrous foreign policy, who got it all wrong in the first place." At the root of this crisis, Moyers said, is media consolidation. "As conglomerates swallow up newspapers, magazines, publishing houses and broadcast outlets, news organizations are folded into entertainment divisions. The news hole in the print media shrinks to make room for ads, celebrities, nonsense and propaganda, and the news we need to know slips from sight." Bill Moyers’ speech is watchable on YouTube. Or read it, along with Dan Rather’s speech, at FreePress.net. The Free-Press site is rich with all kinds of material from the conference. Their site is unbelievably comprehensive. There is even an intense video of Moyers face-to-face smackdown with the producer that O’Reilly sent to get video at the conference. Moyers wants Rupert Murdoch to get in the game. The media reform movement is not a new arrival. Track it back in time to FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson (1966 – 1973) and his well-known book How to Talk Back to Your Television Set. But now, the media reform movement is getting bigger by the minute. And when people with the proportions of Moyers and Murdoch and Rather and O’Reilly are batting the ball around, media reform is moving to the big leagues. If you want another indicator of the national interest in media reform, consider this: FreePress.net was launched in 2002 by three people – Josh Silver, Robert W. McChesney and John Nichols. Today, FreePress.net lists 34 staff members on their website. Check out their bios and portfolios and you will get a sense of how important and well-organized the movement has become. To that I say, "You go People." Let’s see media reform move front and center as part of the agenda for this year’s election. What do our candidates propose for media reform? Whether you are a rookie or a veteran on media reform, now is the time to get stronger on the movement. This is [sic] our media and it will only get worse unless we make it better (July KUNM Zounds via DXLD) ** U S A. Help ID this Spanish audio http://qantum.zftp.com/airchecks/SS%2094.7%20080630%20mono.mp3 Can you all listen and tell me what this is on 94.7 in mono at 1830 [EDT?] 6/30. Thanks, (Steve Solomon, Yarmouthport, MA, FM: T-85 with 5 110 kHz SNR filters, APS-13 @ 30ft, WTFDA via DXLD) Something on the order of "More Mexican Music"..."Latina 94.7" My guess, since it's mono, is a pirate. While there are a lot of Spanish pirates in FL, there probably aren't many Mexican ones. Just found the following - and it's unfortunately [why?] in Spanish. http://www.latina94.com/home.html But the slogan on the website homepage is exactly what I heard in your clip. It also mentions "American Airlines Arena", of which there is one in Miami (Russ Edmunds, Blue Bell, PA, ibid.) Hi, there is a clear ID here is the transcription: "...les saludan... quiubule comp?s somos patrulla 81. Qué tal amigos, les saluda Jorge Luis Cabrera y les invito para que sigan escuchando la mejor música mexicana. En la radio del pueblo Latina 94 punto com" "quiubule" is slang, equivalent to "Hi". Something like this in English: "...salutes you.. Hi buddies we are patrol 81. How are you friends, Jose Luis Cabrera salutes you and I inviting you to keep listening to the best mexican music. In the Peoples's Radio Latina dot com" ....: means I'm not sure what they are saying. It matches the site: http://www.latina94.com That is in the ID. Saludos (Humberto Molina, El Salvador, ibid.) Looks like it`s a pirate in Savannah; was getting everything from that area down to Jacksonville. According to radio-info.com. Thanks for all the help!! (Steve Solomon, MA, ibid.) I think this is the pirate I've heard a number of times over the last year when tropo is going good to the east. They have a potent signal, and have always cut off at midnight. Now they even have a website! (Randy KW4RZ Zerr, EM60 Ft Walton Beach, FL, ibid.) Yes, but the website mentions Miami, so where is this pirate located ? 73 KAZ (Neil Kazaross, IL/WI, ibid.) I think the mention of Miami is in a section on the website that is just automated music news, similar to what you see on Clear Channel stations' websites (Jeff Lehmann, Hanson, MA, ibid.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PUBLICATIONS ++++++++++++ LATE WINTER TA LOGGINGS REPORT Yes; I just finished compiling my LW-MW last winter loggings. Best moments from here occurred around Christmas-New year day period. February has been generally poor. One of the main reason of that lateness is that I've been working on my website. It is now on line since last month. You can find there a detailed description of my receiving equipment, DX site, a bit of personal DX history, DX audio files and those TA logs already published on this forum. If you wish to, have a look at: http://www.quebecdx.com As for the winter loggings, check: http://www.quebecdx.com/2007_08_winter_loggings.pdf (Sylvain Naud, Portneuf, Quebec, CANADA, Perseus SDR (Since last May) Icom ICR75 with LF mods 228 meters (750 feet) terminated beverage towards Africa (88 degrees) 289 meters (950 feet, winter seasonal) terminated beverage towards Europe (55 degrees) 106 meters (350 feet) unterminated beverage NE-SW (28-208 degrees) Homebrew K9AY with vactrol T2FD cut for 90m band Two 30 meters (100 feet) long wire Homebrew remote wire antenna switcher DX Engineering RPA-1 HF preamplifier MFJ-1026 phaser with LF mods June 30, MWDX yg via DXLD) Lovely informative website, Sylvain = congratulations and well done (John Plimmer, Montagu, Western Cape Province, South Africa, http://www.dxing.info/about/dxers/plimmer.dx ibid.) Thank you John. You should put a website too! It is always pleasant to read you and with all the experience that you have, you shouldn't be in lack of content. A further increase to active levels occurred during 25 - 26 June with minor to major storm levels at high latitudes. Activity decreased to quiet to unsettled levels for the remainder of the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) occurred during 24 - 25 June in advance of a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (HSS). The CIR was associated with increased proton densities (peak 20 p/cc at 24/2251 UTC), a solar sector boundary crossing (toward (-) to away (+)), and changes in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). IMF changes included increased Bt (peak 15 nT at 25/1710 UTC) and intermittent periods of southward Bz (minimum -10 nT at 25/1735 UTC). The HSS commenced on 25 June, reached a peak velocity of 686 km/sec at 26/1846 UTC, then began to gradually subside on 28 June. Solar wind velocities decreased to a low of 470 km/sec by the end of the period. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 02 - 28 JULY 2008 Solar activity is expected to be very low. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 13 - 21 July. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels during 02 - 11 July. Activity is expected to increase to active levels during 12 - 13 July with storm levels possible at high latitudes due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Activity is expected to decrease to unsettled levels during 14 - 17 July as the high-speed stream gradually subsides. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 18 - 21 July. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 22 - 24 July due to recurrence. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 25 - 28 July. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2008 Jul 01 2024 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2008 Jul 01 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2008 Jul 02 66 5 2 2008 Jul 03 66 8 3 2008 Jul 04 66 12 3 2008 Jul 05 66 10 3 2008 Jul 06 66 5 2 2008 Jul 07 66 5 2 2008 Jul 08 66 5 2 2008 Jul 09 66 5 2 2008 Jul 10 66 5 2 2008 Jul 11 66 10 3 2008 Jul 12 66 15 4 2008 Jul 13 66 15 4 2008 Jul 14 66 10 3 2008 Jul 15 66 10 3 2008 Jul 16 66 8 3 2008 Jul 17 66 10 3 2008 Jul 18 66 5 2 2008 Jul 19 66 5 2 2008 Jul 20 66 5 2 2008 Jul 21 66 5 2 2008 Jul 22 66 10 3 2008 Jul 23 66 10 3 2008 Jul 24 66 8 3 2008 Jul 25 66 5 2 2008 Jul 26 66 5 2 2008 Jul 27 66 5 2 2008 Jul 28 66 5 2 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1415, DXLD) ###
